Daily Coffee Machine Cleaning Tips for a Perfect Cup Every Time
A quick daily routine keeps your machine in peak condition, prevents bitter flavours, and extends the life of your investment.
Owning a quality espresso machine is a real pleasure — but only when it's clean. Coffee is rich in oils that go rancid quickly, and mineral deposits from our Mpumalanga water supply can block jets and damage seals within months. The good news is that a simple daily routine takes less than five minutes and makes a dramatic difference.
Start every morning by running a blank shot — a short flush of hot water through the group head before you pull your first espresso. This rinses away any stale coffee residue from the previous day and brings the group head up to temperature evenly. You'll immediately notice a cleaner, brighter flavour in your first cup.
After each session, remove the portafilter and knock out the spent puck while it's still damp. Rinse the portafilter basket under hot running water and use a small brush to clear the holes. Leave the portafilter out of the group head when the machine is idle — keeping it clamped in traps moisture and promotes the growth of oils in the shower screen seal.
Wipe the steam wand immediately after every use. Milk proteins begin to bake onto the metal within seconds if left. A damp cloth takes three seconds; removing baked-on milk later takes grinding effort and can damage the wand's tip holes.
At the end of each day, backflush the group head if your machine has a three-way solenoid valve (most commercial and prosumer machines do). Place a blind filter basket in the portafilter, add a small measure of espresso machine cleaning powder, and run three 10-second backflush cycles. Finish with three cycles using plain water to rinse out any detergent.
Empty and rinse the drip tray daily. The drip tray is a breeding ground for bacteria and mould if left unchecked, and an overflowing drip tray can damage counter surfaces and the base of your machine.
These five steps — morning flush, portafilter rinse after each use, steam wand wipe, daily backflush, and drip tray rinse — form the backbone of a maintenance routine that will keep your machine performing beautifully.
